Nov 05,2006: The road to 1.2: online the new release 1.1.9
This new release introduce 3 main changes:
1) There are some problems using YouTranslate! in the systray area with Gnome 2.16 (I have the same problem with my new XUbuntu 6.10); so in this release the systray will not be used. If you are using KDE please send me your feedback. If your Window Manager is not Gnome 2.16 and you want to use the systray, please use the previous release (1.1.8)
2) Now you can customize the key used to activate the “Large Translator”
3) “WorldLingo” has being deleted from the available service provider due to the type of technology used in its site.

Jul 19,2006: Finally the release 1.1.8 is online
The most important feature added to this release (requested from many users) is the Large Translator (go to the screenshots for more details), a new Window where you can translate greater text. To open it just activate (focus on it) the textbox of the source language and press F12.

Description

What is YouTranslate! ?
Briefly it’s just a small and simple application that lets you use the Google Translate service in an easy and fast way. I have developed this software just because every time I need to translate a word (or a phrase) I have to open my internet browser, go to the translation service provider, select source and destination languages, and wait for the response.

With YouTranslate! it’s possible to skip many of the previous steps and focus your attention only on what do you want to translate.
In the current release, the application supports only the following translation service provider: Google.
Thanks to the internal structure of the application, it will be possible to add other providers in the future.
If you need a different provider inside YouTranslate!, just send me an email with the request.
Finally, let me say that YouTranslate! is freely inspired to GNOME Translate.

Dependencies

So far, to run YouTranslate! on your distro, you need:

  • mono-jit
  • gtk-/glib-/glade-sharp2.0
  • libglib2.0-cil
  • libgtk2.0-cil
  • libglade2.0-cil
  • libgtk2.0-dev

Download

YouTranslate! is free software, released under the GPL license.

Current release is 1.2.2
It’s possible to download YouTranslate! as a deb package created on my system:

youtranslate-1.2.2_all.deb

or directly the exe file in the following archive:

youtranslate_1.2.2_bin.tar.gz

It’s possible to download also the complete source code with MonoDevelop Solution file in order to compile it directly on your Linux box:

Install and run

If you have downloaded the deb package, login as root and run the following command in a console:

dpkg -i youTranslate-1.2.2_all.deb

You will find the application link in your Utility/Accessories submenu.

WARNING: if the menu item does not launch the application, you have to modify manually the launcher located in your “/usr/bin” directory.
Go there and edit the file youtranslate; the original file seems like this:

#!/bin/sh

# export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=”/–YOUR PATH TO MONO DIR–/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH”
THE_EXE=”/usr/local/youtranslate/youtranslate.exe”
exec mono $THE_EXE

You have to uncomment the line beginning with “export” and replace the green string “–YOUR PATH TO MONO DIR–” with the complete path to your mono directory, for example:

/home/laas/mono-1.1.16/

If you have the archive, just run the following (in a text console):

tar xzvf youTranslate_1.2.2_bin.tar.gz
mono youtranslate.exe

That’s all.
